Heat Islands: The concrete and the temperature rise in the cities
Undoubtedly every year the big cities are catching up with the rural carriers, this is because the growing global population lives in cities or migrating into them, according to global statistics, in 1800 only 1% of the world population lived in cities of over 10,000 inhabitants. In 1960 this proportion was 20%. In 2025 the ratio will approach 65%.
Each year builds many complex urban and cities are increasing in square meters this would have no major problem if you take into account urban design criteria, whose absence produces negative effects on the environment and therefore involves all the inhabitants of these cities, which are the ones who experience these effects, some of them are as follows :
Alteration of the natural features of land, inerting and desertification, increase of temperature in the cities, deterioration of air quality, landscape deterioration, distortion of the environment, the fracture of the natural water cycle , among others
Accordingly, in cities increased temperature is higher than in rural areas, because the natural soil is replaced by concrete creating "heat islands", there are several factors that make the temperature is greater: the building, the lack of green spaces, the gaseous pollutants, and anthropogenic heat, ie, the heat generated by industrial activities.
materials like concrete or asphalt have a great capacity to absorb heat and high heat capacity, and dissipate heat at night, this effect causes the heat to keep even at night because Concrete has the ability to absorb heat and radiate it at night.
To reduce this should be taken into account important elements in urban design, for example, the gradual increase of green areas (parks, even on rooftops of buildings), generation of more lakes (in squares for example), among others, that would be required to mitigate the action of the temperature increase in the cities.
